Store-bought potting soil is mostly peat. Peat compacts. When it does, water sits instead of draining, and roots suffocate. A plant in that pot can't recover, however carefully you water.

Repot once you notice any of these: roots growing out of the bottom of the pot, soil that dries very quickly between waterings, a plant that is top-heavy and wants to fall over, or roots pushing the plant up and out of its pot. For most houseplants that is every 1 to 2 years.
In our survey of 1,182 customers, 94.2% saw stronger root and leaf growth within a few weeks. Most also notice that watering gets easier, because the soil has the right structure.
Peat compacts over time and can stop absorbing water. We use coconut fibre and worm castings instead, so the mix stays airy and usable for much longer. It is also better for the environment.
